From the Librarian's Desk: Highlights of Recent Award Winners
On a snowy morning in early February (one of the many), I settled onto my couch to watch the livestream of the American Library Association Youth Media Awards. The most widely-known of these awards are the Caldecott and Newbery Medals, but, in addition to these medals, the Youth Media Awards also recognize and honor outstanding Latino/Latina and African American authors and illustrators. They also reward outstanding works about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experiences, books that were originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and authors/illustrators whose works "embody the artistic expression of disability experiences." The 2015 Youth Media Awards winners and honors represent a range of diverse authors, illustrators, and subjects. Listed below are some highlights of the award winners/honors.
