Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial and ethnic group in the United States, yet too often their histories, voices and perspectives are underrepresented or essentialized in the curriculum. In this one day program we will explore strategies and resources for incorporating the longstanding and diverse history of Asians in America into the classroom. We will view traditional narratives and stereotypes of Asian Americans through a critical lens and work with resources that can complicate, debunk and enhance student understanding of Asian American histories and experiences. Throughout the day we will work with primary sources, visuals, literature, and selected scholarly articles as we consider their application to the state framework and ways of highlighting Asian American agency and activism for students.
