The written word is a powerful instrument of social change and self expression. As activists take to the streets and organize, creative nonfiction writers confront social issues, channeling their observations and critiques, through poignant prose. Throughout American history, African American and Latinx creative nonfiction writers have been influential in raising the public’s critical consciousness while crafting original and innovative contributions to the arts.
In this one-day workshop, we will explore the history of creative nonfiction, speak with writers, and consider the value of integrating the work of freedom writers into history, social studies, and English Language Arts classrooms.
