Beyond Gold Mountain is a survey course exploring Asian American historical narratives from pre-colonial America to modern times.  Participants will examine the lives of early mariners, merchants, and laborers of Asian descent who helped shape Asian and Asian American neighborhoods across a nascent United States.  The course will explore how harmful labels including the model minority stereotype and the perception of being perpetually foreign have hurt but not debilitated the resilient Asian American community. Participants will also explore examples of agency and activism against racism and discrimination, as Asian Americans continue to forge their unique identities and find their place in the fabric of American society.
