Anthropologist and curator Ingrid Ahlgren will introduce you to this unique region encompassing Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia and Australia, from its pre-colonial past to its present.  Three teachable themes will anchor our session: the geography, populations and human settlement patterns of Oceania; its economic and trade relations; and the multi-layered effects of colonization on its peoples and history. Participants will engage with arts, material culture, Indigenous maps, and other primary sources, and meet new curriculum materials about Pacific history from the state of Hawaii.
