Our Boston-area book group this year pays honor to banned and challenged writers, U.S. and global—and to the librarians and educators who defend our freedom to read! In this series we will read brave and original works for young people and adults that illuminate our current situation. Our discussions will ask, what makes a book threatening or controversial to a society or its institutions of power? What lights the fire of resistance in writers and their readers? With a combination of in-person and virtual meetings, this group is open to any educator in grades K-12 (space permitting). Our sessions are informal and collaborative. Resources and supporting materials will be offered for each session.
Book Selections Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pérez; China Dream by Ma Jian; short fiction by Salman Rushdie; Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe, Not All Boys are Blue by George M. Johnson; and another TBD.
