This workshop is a collaboration between Primary Source and the Forbes House Museum and is offered In conjunction with the museum’s new exhibition, Opium: The Business of Addiction.
In this one-day workshop, educators will hear from scholars, visit the exhibit and work with classroom-friendly resources to investigate how governmental and personal ambition fueled the trade of opium. Educators will probe the moral complexities of the opulent lifestyles and great civic and philanthropic endeavors funded by the illegal opium trade. Additionally, they will investigate the key role the opium trade had in framing the Chinese view of themselves in the modern world. Finally, there will be time for ample discussion of how to make connections between the opium epidemic of the 19th century and the current one in our own society.
Especially for educators of grades 9-12 and 5th-grade educators who teach about the China Trade and the Early Republic due to the 2018 DESE History and Social Studies Framework. Health and wellness educators will also find this workshop of interest
